Nduta (Tanzania) : a Burundian refugee found dead in the camp

SOS Médias Burundi

Nduta, August 30, 2025 – The lifeless body of a Burundian refugee, known as Adelin, was found on the morning of Friday, August 29, 2025, in a gutter in the middle of Nduta camp, Tanzania. According to witnesses, he may have been killed elsewhere before being dumped there.

Adelin, head of the household in Village 7, Zone 5, was seen by passersby very early that morning, who immediately alerted the police. His death has fueled concern among the camp population.

« His body was clean, without injuries, and his clothes were neither torn nor covered in mud. This indicates that he was probably transported from another location, » witnesses said.

He was found in a gutter separating Zones 4 and 5, along a paved road crossing the camp, not far from the offices of MSF (Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières) and the WFP (World Food Program).

The police have not yet released the results of the autopsy conducted at Kibondo District Hospital in the Kigoma region (northwest of the country), where the camp is located. However, the refugees are demanding a thorough investigation.

According to his brother-in-law, with whom he had shared a drink the night before, Adelin was last seen around 8 p.m., returning home. « It’s certain that criminals were waiting for him near his home, as he had left Zone 11 unharmed, » he said.

The victim was not involved in any political activity and had never reported any threats to the police. Adelin’s death has renewed concerns about rising crime in a camp hosting more than 58,000 Burundian refugees.
