According to several sources, Prosper Yamuremye is suspected of having released a man implicated in the embezzlement of several grams of gold from a mining cooperative in Kayanza (northern Burundi). The accused, whose identity has not been revealed, denied the charges in court earlier this week. However, as his explanations failed to convince the judges, he was transferred to Ngozi central prison (north).

Unofficial reports indicate that this individual allegedly paid a bribe of 20 million Burundi francs to the prosecutor to secure his release. The prosecutor, already known for his alleged involvement in corruption cases, allegedly used his influence to facilitate this illegal release.

A scandal that shocks the public opinion

The arrest of Prosper Yamuremye has sparked a wave of outrage among the population, who are demanding exemplary justice. Many voices are speaking out against the corruption that plagues the judicial system and allows criminals to escape punishment.

Burundian authorities have not yet made an official statement on this case, but the public remains attentive to the progress of the investigation. Many hope that this arrest will mark a turning point in the fight against impunity and corruption within the Burundian judicial system.

The position of the Burundian justice system

In such cases, the Burundian justice system provides for strict sanctions against officials implicated in corruption. According to the Burundian Penal Code, public officials convicted of corruption face prison sentences of up to 10 years, along with heavy fines. The government has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to fighting corruption and restoring the integrity of the judicial system. However, many observers remain skeptical about the effective implementation of these measures.

The Ngozi prosecutor first passed through the National Intelligence Service (SNR) cells in the commercial city of Bujumbura before being transferred to the prison in the commercial capital on March 28. He was arrested after a local mining operator denounced the charges for which he is being prosecuted during a meeting with President Évariste Ndayishimiye. The latter stated that he was also aware of other similar cases in which the Ngozi prosecutor was involved.
