Giheta: discovery of a corpse

A decomposing body of a man was discovered last Saturday in the Nyambeho valley separating the communes of Gitega and Giheta in the province of Gitega (central Burundi). It has been identified. Two suspects have been arrested as part of an ongoing police investigation.

Tharcisse Ndayirukiye, 62, was from Kiremera hill in Giheta commune. According to Eugénie Bigirindavyi, Kiremera hill chief, the deceased had disappeared on February 5 after sharing a drink with other residents in a local refreshment bar in the evening.

The police apprehended two suspects as part of an ongoing investigation, according to the grassroot administration sources. These are two men who were last seen with Tharcisse Ndayirukiye.

In less than two months, nearly 20 bodies – some of which have not been identified – have been found in different localities in the province of Gitega, according to a count by SOS Médias Burundi. A first in this province, the birthplace of President Évariste Ndayishimiye.
