His first name is « Éric Aimable » and he lived in the Kakuma II area. This father of two was a carpenter.
According to witnesses, the tragedy took place on the night of December 20, 2024, precisely at block 7 of his area, « just behind the central hospital called ‘seven’ where his body was found ».
According to the same sources, Éric Aimable was returning from his carpentry site.
« He was just ambushed by unknown people who robbed him of all his money and phone. They then tied him up and beat him to death. His body had several wounds on his face and chest, » they say.
His Burundian compatriots suspect young Sudanese « who most often attack Burundians, Congolese and Rwandans and all those who have money here in the camp ». They demand police investigations and fear an escalation of crime in the last days of the year.
They ask the police to be extra vigilant during this holiday season.
Originally from Buraza district in Gitega province (central Burundi), the victim fled Burundi in 2015, following the crisis that was triggered by another controversial term of the late President Pierre Nkurunziza, the same year.
Kakuma is home to more than 200,000 refugees, including more than 25,000 Burundians.
