Dzaleka (Malawi) : Armed robbery

Several gunshots rang out in Dzaleka camp on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. Gunmen robbed shops. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

According to several witnesses, gunmen « in uniform resembling that of the (Malawi) army, aboard a pick-up that resembles vehicles of the (Malawi) police » entered two areas of Dzaleka camp : Lisungwe and Kawale.

« We suspect that these are police officers because the victims called for help, in vain, » said refugees from Dzaleka.

Several gunshots were heard. Three shops run by Rwandans and Burundians were then vandalized. A Burundian trader told police that « criminals stole three million Malawian kwacha from him. »

Police say they have started investigations. Refugees have been arrested, according to local police.

Dzaleka camp is home to more than 50,000 refugees of several nationalities, including more than 11,000 Burundians.
