Rumonge: a school year amidst clean water crisis and lack of mattresses

It was this Monday, September 16 that the school year began throughout the country. Boarding schools began receiving students last Sunday. At the Rumonge high school (southwest Burundi), school authorities deplore the lack of drinking water, beds and mattresses. This is at a time when the Mpox pandemic is making headlines in Burundi.

At least 481 students will be welcomed to the boarding school for this new school year at the Rumonge high school.

The director of the high school Déo Bakanibona says that his establishment is experiencing enormous difficulties in welcoming students.

« The school does not have drinking water. Welcoming more than 400 students to the boarding school when there is not a drop of water is not easy. We fear diseases. In addition, we do not have enough beds and mattresses, » he lamented.

Health authorities are asking school officials to take measures to protect students against the Mpox pandemic.

The director of Rumonge high school is asking the Ministry of National Education to « come to our aid » so that students can start the school year in good conditions.

The case of Rumonge high school is not isolated. Several other schools are experiencing the same difficulties in the small East African nation.
