Charles Mpawenimana (67 years old) and his wife Frédiane Ndayisavyimana, 52 years old, were killed over the night of August 26 to 27. The double murder took place at Nyempundu in the commune of Mugina in the province of Cibitoke (north-western Burundi). The local administration believes that suspicions of witchcraft are at the origin of this double assassination. INFO SOS Médias Burundi

The couple was surprised by unknown persons at their home around 11 p.m. on the night of August 26, according to grassroot administrators. Charles Mpawenimana and Frédiane Ndayisavyimana were killed by individuals armed with machetes, witnesses told SOS Médias Burundi.

A relative of the two victims and local administrators are asking the police to conduct serious and independent investigations to determine the circumstances of the couple’s death and the perpetrators of the crime.

The municipal administrator of Mugina Julienne Ndayihaya, says that an investigation has already been opened in this case. Only residents say that it is not clear that people are killed in areas where the Imbonerakure (members of the CNDD-FDD youth league) and former war veterans, especially from the former Hutu rebellion, regularly conduct night patrols.

Administrative sources indicate that the couple was suspected of witchcraft at a time when other neighbors are talking about land disputes.
