Nyarugusu (Tanzania) : three Burundian refugees killed in a road accident
The tragedy occurred on Friday. Refugees are demanding rigorous police control in the granting of driving licenses, especially for motorcyclists. INFO SOS Médias Burundi
The accident took place in the area inhabited by Burundian refugees, Nyarugusu also sheltering Congolese.
“There was a collision of two motorcycles. The rider and his two passengers all died on the spot. Speeding is the cause of this accident,” say refugees who witnessed the scene.
They regret that driving licenses are granted without any rigorous police control.
“Someone can do a few practical sessions for at least a week, and there they have their license. Cases of corruption are also reported because there are people who obtain these permits even before these practical sessions,” the occupants of Nyarugusu say indignantly.
At the Nyarugusu camp, motorcycle transport is regular, especially since the main road linking Tanzania and Burundi passes right through the camp.
“It’s a profitable business but also involves a lot of risk. We ask the police to be more vigilant and form more speed bumps on this road to limit the speed of drivers,” say refugees.
In the hospitals of this camp which hosts more than 110,000 refugees, including more than 50,000
Burundians, several injuries are due to road accidents and even more to motorcyclists.
