Gitega: lack of flour worries inmates at central prison

Since last Monday, the 1,728 inmates incarcerated at the central prison of Gitega (Burundi’s political capital) no longer receive their ratio of corn and cassava flour.

A source close to this detention center says the most affected are those whose homes are far away and who rely on the 350 g of corn or cassava flour that are usually reserved for them to survive as there is no one to bring them food.
From time to time, they only receive 350 g of beans for each detainee and per day.
They say it is practically impossible to last the whole day and ask benefactors to come to their aid.
Built since 1923 to accommodate 400 people, the Gitega central prison currently has 1,728 inmates, or more than 400% of its capacity.
