Rumonge, May 18, 2025 – With just three weeks to go before the legislative and district elections, the Union for National Progress (Uprona) is stepping up to denounce the excesses of the CNDD-FDD regime, in power since 2005.
During a rally held on Sunday in Rumonge (southwestern Burundi), Uprona President Olivier Nkurunziza vigorously criticized the current government, which he accuses of having transformed « anti-values » into a mode of governance. Despite his political ties with the CNDD-FDD, Olivier Nkurunziza did not mince his words, denouncing a system based on nepotism, the exclusion of intellectuals, and the degradation of national diplomacy.
« Many competent young people stay at home while the less qualified get jobs simply because they are members of the CNDD-FDD, » he decried to applause. According to him, political affiliation now takes precedence over competence in appointments to key positions.
The UPRONA president also questioned the ability of Burundian ambassadors to adequately represent the country abroad. « Has Burundi turned its back on globalization? » he wondered, pointing to weakened diplomacy and flagging international cooperation.
He also deplored the low regard given to university professors and researchers in public policy, advocating for the rehabilitation of scientific research, particularly at the University of Burundi, and for major investments in innovation and knowledge.
His speech, punctuated by historical references, called for a return to fundamental Burundian values such as ubushingantahe, ubuntu, ethics, and integrity. « Burundi deserves better than mediocrity and division, » he insisted, calling for change led by leaders united for justice and peace.
Jeanne Niyonkuru, an activist present at the meeting, expressed her hope : « We need honest leaders who respect expertise and work for the common good, not just for their own clan. UPRONA is our chance for change. »
In conclusion, Olivier Nkurunziza presented UPRONA’s electoral platform for the June 5 elections, inviting voters to trust « the legacy of Prince Louis Rwagasore to put Burundi back on the path to national dignity. »
Louis Rwagasore, son of King Mwambutsa IV, is an emblematic figure of Burundian independence. Founder of UPRONA in 1958, he was Prime Minister in 1961 before being assassinated shortly thereafter. His fight for national unity, social justice, and independence remains a major source of inspiration in Burundian politics.
