Marangara : a 5-year-old child killed with a machete amid a dispute between neighbors

Masama village, in Giheta zone, Marangara district (Ngozi province, northern Burundi), was rocked by a horrific tragedy on Wednesday evening. A 5-year-old girl, Claudine Irankunda, was killed with a machete in a senseless act of revenge, linked to a dispute between two drunken neighbors.
A crime of unprecedented violence
According to testimonies gathered on the scene, Denis Nsanzamahoro, involved in an argument with another resident, decided to take revenge by attacking the girl, who was innocent in the conflict. Alerted by the screams, neighbors tried to intervene, but it was already too late: the child had succumbed to her injuries.
Shock and outrage quickly swept through the community, shocked by this act of gratuitous violence. The police intervened shortly after the tragedy and arrested the suspect.
Appeal for calm and justice
The Marangara district administrator, Goreth Nshimirimana, confirmed the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
« His case is being processed to ensure justice is done. We call on the population to remain calm and avoid any form of private justice. In the event of a conflict, recourse must always be made to competent authorities. »
This tragedy has rekindled the debate on conflict management in rural communities and the impact of excessive alcohol consumption, often cited as an aggravating factor in acts of violence.
Residents of Marangara, still in shock, hope that justice will be served swiftly for Claudine Irankunda and that measures will be taken to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
