Sahabo case : the prosecution requested a heavy sentence and fine against the former CEO of Kira Hospital

The trial of the former CEO of Kira Hospital, the most prestigious clinic in Burundi, was deliberated on Friday. This, after two successive days of his appearance at the central prison of Ruyigi (eastern Burundi) where he is incarcerated. He pleaded not guilty. The prosecution requested against him 20 years in jail and a fine of 9 million euros.

Judges of the Muha Court in the south of the commercial city of Bujumbura who are assigned to this case, sat on the move at the central prison of Ruyigi. The hearing started on Thursday and closed on Friday.

According to a witness, the former CEO of Kira Hospital pleaded not guilty and denounced several violations in this case including « his abusive detention for 48 days in an intelligence dungeon ».

The public prosecutor accuses the promoter of the most modern hospital in the small East African nation of « fraudulent management ». But Dr. Christophe Sahabo refuted this « unfounded » allegation.

After two days in a row, the Sahabo case was put under advisement. The public prosecutor requested Friday, 20 years of jail against Christophe Sahabo and a fine of 9 million euros. The concerned person rejected all the accusations against him and pleaded not guilty.


He and his lawyer requested that he be released unconditionally.

Sources at the central prison of Ruyigi speak of « a courageous man but whose health is very fragile at the moment ».

Lawyer Gustave Niyonzima who represents Sahabo before the international courts wrote on his account X (Formerly Twitter) that several diplomats accredited to Burundi had traveled to follow this trial.

A reporter of SOS Médias Burundi realized that the hearing was open to the public but that very few residents had gone there.
