Rumonge : the Magara-Gitaza section less passable

Users of the National Road number three (RN3) connecting the commercial city Bujumbura to Rumonge (southwest Burundi) are complaining. The Magara-Gitaza section has become less passable. The company in charge of repairing this road speaks of non-payment. Provincial authorities have not yet spoken on this subject.

It was after a landslide when the road was damaged, according to residents.

« After heavy rains recently, patches of mountains have collapsed onto the road. Since then, vehicles have been forced to make a small passage. The situation concerns the entire Magara-Gitaza section », report residents.

Drivers of vehicles doing paid transport say that the road wears out very quickly.

« As a result, several potholes are created on the road. And we have to be careful when driving our vehicles there. It takes us time and more fuel that we unfortunately have difficulty finding, » bus drivers told SOS Médias Burundi.

Passengers say they waste a lot of time on this road that extends to the border with Tanzania.

The company that won the contract to asphalt the RN3 is still carrying out its work. But it has not filled the potholes or repaired this section. The provincial authorities have not yet commented on this matter.

Sources at this company, contacted by SOS Médias Burundi, say that the work is progressing slowly due to poor payment by the Burundian government. The latter has not yet responded.
