Kiremba : school activities paralyzed by an event of the ruling party

An event of the CNDD-FDD, the ruling party in Burundi, paralyzed all activities at a secondary school in Kiremba district, Ngozi province (northern Burundi), on Thursday. Parents and educators denounce what they call « politicization of the school environment ».

According to witnesses, several CNDD-FDD party activists in this district gathered in the chief town since the morning for a meeting aimed at assessing the recent enrollment in next year’s elections and preparing for these elections.
Before the activity at around 5:30 a.m., the Imbonerakure (members of the CNDD-FDD youth league) took to the streets, chanting songs that intimidate and denigrate opponents.
School activities paralyzed at Kiremba Secondary School
Members of the CNDD-FDD youth league arrived at Kiremba Secondary School and its surroundings at 6 a.m., according to school sources.
There, they sang songs praising the « prowess » of President Évariste Ndayishimiye and Réverien Ndikuriyo, the secretary general of the former Hutu rebellion.
They hung flags of the ruling party on the fence of the secondary school, according to our sources. Kiremba Secondary School is among the oldest boarding schools in Burundi.
« All activities were disrupted. We could not teach under such conditions. All assessments were also suspended, » say teachers, resigned.
The school’s director is a CNDD-FDD activist. He showed indifference, teachers regret.
The assessment of the recent voter registration in Kiremba took place in the premises of the high school.
Parents and teachers who spoke to SOS Médias Burundi are asking local and Burundian school officials to ensure that « the school environment remains apolitical. »
