Bujumbura : bread prices revised upwards

Residents of the economic capital Bujumbura are beginning to get used to the incessant rise in the prices of basic necessities, but the pace of this increase worries more than one. Shopkeepers received a note from the Association of Artisanal Bread Producers of Burundi announcing that the price of bread must be revised upwards. N. Bosco from the Mutanga Sud neighborhood in the center of Bujumbura says the situation has become unbearable.

« Parents who have children who go to school in the morning, how are they going to manage, given that the means are now limited for many families given the increase in the price of almost all basic necessities », he laments.

Sliced ​​bread that used to cost 4,300 Burundian francs now costs 5,000 francs. City dwellers who spoke to SOS Médias Burundi speak of a situation that is « unbearable for ordinary citizens ».

In the Gasenyi area in the north of the economic capital, residents say that local traders have applied a 500 franc mark-up on portions of bread.

« The price of bread that used to cost 3,000 Burundian francs has been set at 3,500 francs since Wednesday, it’s really very worrying », lamented a mother met in one of the most populated areas of Bujumbura.

Bakers explain the increase by the surge in the price of flour. In just six months, the price of bread has been revised upwards twice.
